2005 events

Take a good look at the map on the left. It's got all the event destinations marked. It also links through to mapquest and the Park Service, if you want to look around. Note where Big Bend Campground is in relation to Moab.

Friday schedule
As everyone starts to arrive at Big Bend, we'll just hang around, chat and set up camp. At about 4:00 p.m. we'll go for a easy ride up into Castle Valley and the foothills of the 12,000-foot La Sal mountains. It's maybe 45 miles of easy, winding country road that follows the infamous Porcupine Rim trail. If you're hardcore, bring your mountain bike and hit it! For Moab rally veterans, this is the usual Sunday morning ride.

For 2004, we're skipping the ride to Dead Horse Point where you get an amazing view of Canyonlands National Park. It's damned near a religious experience that inspired the likes of Edward Abbey. It's a hard 80-mile ride there and back and there's a charge of a few bucks to get into the park. You're encouraged to drive or ride there, but you're on your own for it this year.

BBQ starts at 7 p.m. and there's nothing like the taste of fresh Q'ed food when you're camping. We'll have meat and meatless, salads, chips and that kind of tasty stuff. New this year is Friday evening game night in the sandy desert. Lawn darts, badminton, giant twister, bocce ball. With a little luck, we may even have a swimming pool. Damned good fun! We're having a small raffle Friday night based on skill as much as luck.

Saturday schedule –
two rides this year!

Krispy Kremes and coffee will be available for breakfast. It's a pretty full day, so we'll need to get a good start for group #1's hardcore ride over the the La Sal Loop road starting at 10:00 a.m. for 110 miles and no gas stops. Dana will lead this one. No small bikes or novices.

At about 11:00 a.m. group #2 will leave for a leisurely ride down highway 128 along the Colorado River and to Arches National Park. It's about a 70 mile ride total for the day. There's a fee to get in (I think it's $10) and getting through the gate is slow. No group rates. Sorry, I tried. We'll stop twice, once and the Windows Section and once at Devil's Garden to hang and take in the view.

Then back into Zax at 100 South Main in Moab, for wood-fired pizza. Zax has a special food deal just for scooterists! $11 for all you can eat pizza, salad, soup AND a beer! So Zax can handle the whole gang, we’ll have to split up and go in waves … some can wonder town, hit the car show, see Rod Benders or hit the liquor store.

At 6 p.m. back at camp, we'll start the second annual Moab Scooter Olympics hosted by a Salt Lake's Upstart SC. We bribed local officials to win the bid of this glorious event. Cylinder shot put toss, wheel hub discus, 100 meter push-start, slow ride, you name it! Watch Denver's Olympian Jon Cho wheeze, huff and puff has to retain his title and go for the gold. It'll be a blast. Upstart SC has awards and metals. Then it's the usual Moab jackassery until the wee hours ... and don't forget the SX hill-climb. --> please see inexcusable jackassery rule on the info page <--

Sunday's events
Krispy Kremes and coffee will be available for breakfast again. Once we get our shit together we'll go for a easy ride down the Colorado River and highway 128, Potash Road, past Wallstreet to the White Rim Trail. It's a 50-60 mile ride. There's a special Sunday night event planned if you want to stick around. If you do, email dana@scoot.net for info. This is a reservation only event and space is limited to 30 people.
